A few years ago we had a major wind/rain/hail storm which produced a copule of microbursts. The storm was beyond thrilling (I love storms), but it took out numerous tree branches and felled 60% of the historic trees in the park a copule of blocks away from my parents' house, where I was staying at the time. The deluge was strong enough to wash out people's gravel landscaping and deposit it at the streetcorners, blocking the storm drains and flooding the streets. Eventually the hail stopped, the rain stopped, the wind stopped and so did the ambulance trying to make its way to the hospital four blocks away. Several fallen branches blocked the street. When working in CRM archaeology it was often necessary to move fallen trees off what passed for roads, so I waded out and started hauling out of reflex. I was soon joined by several neighbors, one of whom a fierce-looking Harley rider from a few doors down had thoughtfully fetched a chainsaw. With all of us working together it only took a few minutes to form a gap so that the ambulance could get through. After about half an hour of exertion the downed branches had all been cut up into manageable pieces and hauled up onto the parking and enough of the gravel shoveled out to allow the water to drain. When we finished with that block, we proceeded to clear one block to either side.It felt awesome. It was clear that the damage was widespread and waiting for The Authorities to come fix everything was futile. Though we all got scraped up a bit, nobody minded and nobody sued the city over it.Not terribly far from my parents' house there is an underpass which often floods. Some lady panicked and drove her nice shiny SUV straight into the flooded underpass, which was about ten feet deep in water by that point. Although the hail made the water ice-cold, two men swam out to extract the woman and get her to safety.I love my hometown.I love my hometown.

My block of 10 and under kids love the parade. The mtaroijy of costumes were fun and creative and certainly appropriate for the young ones. Everyone has their opinion, so simply avoid the parade if you feel uncomfortable!
